A layback hack or layback carve is an advanced surfing manoeuvre in which the surfer leans back during the turn, so that the body is no longer above the board.
When the layback is surfed radically, it might for a brief moment even look like the surfer is on or below the surface of the water. To pull off this move you usually need a lot of speed and an excellent technique.
After being frequently used in the 70s, laybacks went a bit out of style for some time. Today, the manoeuvre is executed with significantly more power and speed and can look pretty spectacular – especially when performed by the pros.
